How to become a qualified referee:
GB referees are required to complete a referee's course before they can officiate at sanctioned events. Upon finishing the course, new referees will be asked about their availability and invited to participate in Kickboxing GB-sanctioned competitions.
All referees undergo continuous assessment and coaching by GB's Chief Referee across all levels of domestic competition. Each year at the Nationals, this ongoing assessment may lead to a change in referee class based on performance and attendance.
Referee Classes:
C Class: Novice referees with little to no experience. C-class referees gain experience as corner judges under the guidance of an experienced A-class referee.
B Class: Referees who demonstrate a solid understanding of the rules and consistently apply them in a timely manner. To further their experience and training, B class referees will be asked to act as centre referees under the guidance of an A-class referee. It typically takes 2 years to reach the level of competency required for B class. Assessment for B class usually occurs at the Kickboxing GB Nationals.
A Class: Referees who confidently understand all the rules and can officiate across all disciplines. They should be proficient in using Sportdata and effectively manage the fighting area as well as the Junior referees under their supervision.
Once a referee achieves the status of a qualified domestic A-class referee, they can progress to International events as an International C-class referee. Referees are expected to gain experience at multiple internationals and WAKO world cups before being considered to represent GB at Intercontinental or World Championships.
